Free Hockey Jamboree and Clinic for Kids at RDV Ice Den – The Central Florida Dreamplex (Dreamplex) is preparing to host the State of Florida Sled Hockey Jamboree.  Through the generous support of Simply Healthcare Foundation, five Florida Sled Hockey teams will come together from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM on June 12th, 2021 to match off at the RDV Sportsplex Ice Den.

Sled hockey is typically played by persons with lower extremity impairments.  Although most of the same rules of traditional ice hockey apply to sled hockey, there are key differences between the two.  In sled hockey, players sit in specially designed sleds mounted on two hockey skate blades and, instead of one long stick, players use two shorter sticks. Each stick has a blade on one end for hitting the puck and a metal pick on the other end to enable players to maneuver across the ice.

“We are thrilled to bring all five of Florida’s Sled Hockey programs together for this event,” states Cameron Gomes, CEO of the Central Florida Dreamplex.” Gomes formed the Dreamplex Sled Bears team in 2019. “We are a relatively new team of enthusiastic players. The Jamboree will help us develop our skills and we hope the Learn-to-Play Clinic brings in new players of all ages and skill levels.”

Coming from cities across the state of Florida, the four teams joining the Dreamplex Sled Bears at the Jamboree are Tampa Bay Lightning Sled Hockey, Space Coast Blast, Palm Beach Tiger Sharks, and Brooks IceBreakers, from the Jacksonville area.

“Sled Hockey allows athletes with disabilities and their families to enjoy a fun and competitive experience,” states Corey Fairbanks, Dreamplex Sled Bears Head Coach, “along with the physical benefits, Sled Hockey increases self-confidence, mood, and overall mental health for athletes who sometimes just want to feel part of a team. Sports bring people of all abilities together and it’s important to create and welcome people who may feel there isn’t a sport for them.”
