For Thanksgiving Break, My Central Florida Family took a trip to Niagara Falls for some cold family fun and beautiful, natural beauty!
We flew from Orlando to Buffalo and made the 45 minute drive over the border to the Canada side of the falls. Because we went in off season, we were able to stay in hotels that put us right at the falls, enjoying their beauty, even from our hotel room!
We immediately headed to the falls on the Canadian side and the weather was on our side. Snowing the day before, we had clear skies (though the temps were in the 20’s). It was a beautiful, perfect day to see the falls.
After taking our time at the side of the falls, the family took the Behind the Falls Tour where we journeyed behind the falls and right up close to them. Because it was off season, we couldn’t make it to the lower observation platform, but the higher platform was plenty pretty enough!
Then, we traveled down to the Hornblower Cruises. It’s a cruise that lasts about 30 minutes (leaving the dock every 30 minutes) and takes you right into the mist of the falls so you can see them from down below. They were magnificent.
After visiting the falls up close, we went to Clifton Hill (think I’Drive for Central Forida, but smaller and cheesier). We didn’t stay there long as things were pretty costly and we can do more for less right here at home.
The following day, we traveled to Toronto. I’m not including much here about that trip as it was solely for my eldest son to see a Raptors game. There wasn’t much to do there in the city for families otherwise (at least in that season), so I’m only including our drive to a park to see Lake Ontario.
We opted to only stay in Toronto for one night (think New York City, but smaller, cleaner and less crowded) and we’re so glad we did. We visited Lake Ontario, where we collected rocks, saw some small wildlife (nothing like watching ducks fly in and skid across the icy ponds), and marveled at the beautiful water.
We decided to head back to Niagara for our last night in Canada. We visited the falls again and ate at my son’s new favorite restaurant The Works Gourmet Hamburger Bistro. The next morning, we traveled to the American side of the falls (which we didn’t think we would have time to do).
Now, I would say, if you want the best views of the falls, head to the Canada side, but if you want natural beauty and up close views of the rapids and river, the American side is exquisite. We spent a few hours there staring at the gorgeous views and walking around Goat Island. There were certain things we couldn’t do due to the season, but just walking around was amazing. Be sure NOT to miss Three Sisters Island if you love natural beauty.
Finally, we ended our trip with a delicious German style lunch in Buffalo and then journeyed home. In 4 nights, we visited 3 hotels and definitely got in everything we wanted to see and do. It was a fantastically fun family trip and I highly recommend it for families that like adventure and nature.

- Plan for at least 2 days in Niagara Falls.
- Don’t miss seeing both sides (American and Canadian) if you can.
- Don’t eat at all the chain restaurants (and there are a lot of them). There are a lot of great local eats!
- Try and stay at a hotel with views of the falls. You can maximize your viewing time.
- Take the short drive to see Lake Ontario. It’s not every day you get to see one of the great lakes and they’re prettier than you would imagine!
