OCLS Hispanic Heritage Month 2020 – Children and parents are adapting to new ways of learning from home this school year, and the library is here to help. On September 10, connect with us during Learning from Home with the Library. Discover everything the library has to offer for learning at home and homeschooling. Information for parents and caregivers will be shared, including homeschool and homework help resources.  

OCLS Hispanic Heritage Month 2020


September 15 kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month and the library has lots of fun, educational programs for the family. Celebrate Mexican Independence Day on September 15 with our Mexican Folk Art virtual event, during which we’ll create crafts inspired by Mexican culture. Keep those crafty minds ready on September 24 for Latin Fun Fiesta where we create and learn with Maya and Miguel.

Virtual Event: Campfire Stories and Crafts 

Wednesday, September 2 & 9, 3:30 p.m. 

Enjoy traditional camp crafts then join us to hear “scary” stories and sing campfire songs. S’mores are an optional but a tasty addition to storytime. Recommended for families. 


Virtual Event: As You Wish: Genie Bottle Craft 

Thursday, September 3, 3:30 p.m. 

Design your own magical bottle and complete it with a single wish! Inspired by Kelly Link’s short story ‘The Surfer.’ Registration required. Recommended for families. 


Virtual Event: A Trip to the Caribbean 

Tuesday, September 8, 11 a.m. 

Cruise over to zoom for a fun story and craft celebrating the Spanish speaking countries in the Caribbean. 


Virtual Event: Teddy Bear Picnic 

Wednesday, September 9, 2 p.m. 

Celebrate National Teddy Bear Day with stories, songs and activities. Be sure to bring your favorite stuffed animal to join in on the fun! Recommended for preschoolers. 


Virtual Event: Learning from Home with the Library 

Thursday, September 10, 11 a.m. 

Whether you are just getting started or you would like to add to your K-12 teaching toolkit, find out everything the library has to offer for learning at home and homeschooling. Information for parents and caregivers will be shared including homeschool and homework help resources. Recommended for Adults. 


Virtual Event: Project WILD – Seed Need 

Saturday, September 12, 2 p.m. 

Plants are everywhere – but how do they get from here to there? Learn about the various methods in which seeds disperse and how wildlife aid in dispersal. Ages 6-12. 


Virtual Event: Mexican Folk Art  

Tuesday, September 15, 2 p.m.  

Celebrate Mexican Independence Day and Hispanic Heritage Month by creating your own craft honoring Mexican folk art. Recommended for tweens and teens.  


Virtual Event: Celebrate with Dora and Friends 

Wednesday, September 16, 11 a.m. 

Grab your backpacks and let’s go, vámanos! Join in on the adventure to create crafts and hear stories inspired by Dora the Explorer and her amigos. Recommended for toddlers and preschoolers. 


Virtual Event: Notable Hispanic Americans  

Wednesday, September 16, 4 p.m.  

Get to know more about some inspiring Hispanic Americans with a program that celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month. Recommended for lower and upper elementary.  


Virtual Event: Guitar Sing-A-Long 

Monday, September 21, 11 a.m. 

Join us for this virtual sing-a-long to fun, familiar songs inspired by Hispanic Heritage Month, including live guitar for you and your toddler. Recommended for babies and toddlers.

Virtual Event: Little Chef: Bean Burritos   

Tuesday, September 22, 2 p.m. 

Learn about Hispanic foods while you mash, spread and roll a delicioso Mexican inspired dish. Adult participation is required. Recommended for preschoolers. 


Virtual Event: Cuisine Corner Jr. Fruits Salsa, Cinnamon Chips  

Wednesday, September 23, 6 p.m. 

Turn your fruit into your next hit. Learn how to create fruit salsa and sweet chips to share. Recommended for upper elementary, tween and teens. 


Virtual Event: Latin Fun Fiesta   

Thursday, September 24, 3 p.m. 

Kids, join us for a fun Maya and Miguel celebration! Activities, crafts and culture await you at this program that will prove to be “muy fabuloso”. Recommended for lower and upper elementary.
