What:

Premiering in 1996 with England’s Northern Ballet Theatre and inspired by Bram Stoker’s classic horror tale of the world’s most famous vampire, no one can escape from Pink immediately transporting viewers from a comfy auditorium into Count Dracula’s dark and biting world of lust and evil.

Pink’s choreography is so simultaneously precise and fluid, viewers actually witness the Count’s on-stage and beautifully creepy transformation from red-coated Transylvanian gentleman to his authentic vampire self, which even includes a few marvelous moments of the Count hanging batlike and upside down on stage.

“The ingenuity of Michael Pink’s choreography balanced by brilliant lighting techniques and dramatic sets replicates the experience of watching a classic horror film, yet the characters are dancing right in front of you,” said Orlando Ballet Artistic Director Jorden Morris. “This production exemplifies how ballet is for everyone – it’s a popular tale, told through a team of talented artists who capture everyone’s imagination from the start. Everyone loves a bit of fright around Halloween and Dracula delivers. It’s all great fun for everyone.”

Pink’s creative vision pulls the audience through the story’s psychologically disturbing beginning to its blood-thirsty conclusion, complete with a chorus of zombies singing the “Blood Litany” and marking the end of the count’s reign. Or not.

The production is intricately designed to take everyone along a theatrical journey emboldened by British composer Phillip Feeney’s sweeping musical score that literally causes spines to tingle at just the right moments. His dramatic orchestral swells warn that something terrible is about to happen while the most pointed symphonic peaks just plain scream, “Vampires ahead!”

A masterful fusion of set and costume designs by the award-winning team of Lez Brotherston and Christopher Gable, along with brilliant lighting techniques by David Grill, create stunning cinematic-like visuals that showcase the dancers’ frightening navigations toward the gothic world of Dracula’s unbearable and insatiable thirsts – the true terror of Transylvania. From dark to darker, from light to madness, with the occasional scream, random knock and howl tossed in, the audience is treated to a dramatic, unhappily ever after for virtually everyone who has a stake in getting the heck out of Transylvania.
