What:

Workshops will provide youth with opportunities to work collaboratively to solve inquiry-based problems based on real-world topics while promoting development of 21st Century Skills such as teamwork and problem-solving. Students will be connected with role models and mentors during this program to deepen their relationship and learn more about STEM topics. In addition, Orlando Science Center will provide family engagement opportunities with activities to encourage families to engage in their child’s STEM learning.

Neighborhood Science is a new initiative by Orlando Science Center to provide high-quality STEM education for multiple days each week in afterschool programs and community centers within underrepresented neighborhoods. This initiative helps address the rising demand for STEM careers in Florida and the intense underrepresentation of women and people of color in STEM fields across this country. Through consistent and authentic STEM learning, students engage in hands-on STEM discovery and skill-building through multiple activities, including coding, robotics, virtual reality, engineering design challenges, 3D printing and more.

“There has never been a more crucial time to engage our youth with science, technology, engineering, and math,” Newman said. “Thanks to the support of partners like Disney, we are providing youth with an opportunity for inspiration and education. Neighborhood Science helps fill a pipeline that runs from the Science Center to schools and community centers and onto exciting STEM careers. Disney’s funding expands our impact throughout Central Florida as we create a STEM-centered community that paves the way for access and opportunities for all.”

The first Neighborhood Science program kicked off last summer with students in the Grand Avenue Community Center in Orlando’s Holden Heights neighborhood. It is also currently offered several times a week at the Bradley Otis Boys & Girls Club in the community of West Lakes.
