HER VOICE IS UNDENIABLE. HER FIRE IS UNSTOPPABLE. HER TRIUMPH IS UNLIKE ANY OTHER.

An uplifting comeback story like no other, Tina – The Tina Turner Musical is the inspiring journey of a woman who broke barriers and became the Queen of Rock n’ Roll.

One of the world’s best-selling artists of all time, Tina Turner has won 12 Grammy Awards and her live shows have been seen by millions, with more concert tickets sold than any solo performer in music history.

Featuring her much loved songs, Tina – The Tina Turner Musical is written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Katori Hall and directed by the internationally acclaimed Phyllida Lloyd.

It takes two

It takes two talented actresses to play the incomparable Tina Turner. Naomi Rodgers and Zurin Villanueva share the role of Tina, equally switching off nights on stage. Noami and Zurin do their press opportunities together as well.

Our Review:

Tina: The Tina Turner Musical was a show I was so excited to see on stage. I’ve not seen it before and I took my mother as we are Tina Turner fans. When I asked my 20-year old son’s girlfriend if she wanted to go with me, she didn’t know who Tina Turner was. So, my guess is this might be for a parent’s night out, rather than a bring the kids (as they don’t know the gem that is Tina Turner).

We arrived at 7 PM, when doors opened and gained a seat in the lobby to enjoy a cocktail and other items. There was a small shop with shirts and memorabilia across from us for anyone that wanted a keepsake of the evening. We like to go to the theater a little dressed up, but guests were adorned in everything from shorts to jackets and from dresses to jeans. If you’re wondering what to wear, most people are smart casual to dressed for the occasion, but you’ll see it all.

Once in the theater, we found our seats quickly and the show began about 5 minutes after 8:00 PM.

The show opens with a scene of what will be the highlight of the production (approximately 150 minutes later). Tina, in her wig and all her glory sitting with her back to us on stage. It quickly changes to a scene of a little girl in church, a little girl with a huge voice. Without giving away the whole show, this journey takes us on a trip throughout her life from her upbringing in a violent home to her life with Ike in a violent home. There are scenes of that violence, so little eyes (and parents beware), scenes of drug use, infidelity, and times when Tina is changing on stage (no nudity, but bra and underwear). So, if have kiddos under 13, beware this would probably be rated a PG-13 at best. Many audience members gasped at the tumultuous moments, laughed at the humorous moments and sang along with the best songs of Tina Turner.

It was a riveting story of triumph, especially as it talks about a single mother in her 40’s trying to be a rock star. It was inspiring and emotional to hear Tina’s songs play into moments of her actual life from being with Ike, breaking up from Ike, leaving her grandmother, having babies on the road, desperation as a single mother and more.

All in all, I was glad I went and I was entertained throughout the story. As I arrived home, I found myself in my driveaway further researching her life, whether she was with the same lover from the end of the show, her children (who both sadly died rather recently to cancer and suicide), and her life now in Switzerland.

This show is a great Parent’s Night Out filled with drama, a few laughs, and some great music (that can be a little screamy and loud at times). I would recommend it as a great Parent’s Night Out this weekend!
