Orange County Library September 2021 Events – Hispanic Heritage Month begins September 15, and Orange County Library System joins in the celebration by offering a variety of programs that highlight Hispanic food, culture and arts. On September 15, we recognize Mexican Independence Day with a program about Mexican Folk Art, and on Saturday September 18, award-winning bilingual children’s musical artist Sonia De Los Santos shares joyful songs about her life and Mexican heritage. We’ll also host a special Meet the Authors event featuring a panel of Hispanic authors who will discuss their work.

To recognize Global Peace Week and International Day of Peace, we partner with the Valencia College Peace and Justice Institute to offer a series of programs that focus on mindfulness, empathy and finding inner peace.

Melrose Film Festival
Streaming September 9-23
Join us as we celebrate the art of visual storytelling in short films, animation and music videos with the 4th Annual Melrose Film Festival. This year’s festival is all virtual, with online screenings of 77 selections representing more than 20 countries chosen from over 1,600 submissions. Categories include Animated Shorts, Documentaries, Micro Shorts, Music Videos and Short Films. Melrose Center staff will also offer virtual events on scene and character development, sound effects and 3D and motion capture animation on select dates throughout the festival. Screenings will premiere Thursday, September 9, Noon, and will remain accessible through Thursday, September 23, 6 p.m.
Mexican Folk Art

Celebrate Mexican Independence Day and Hispanic Heritage Month by creating your own craft honoring Mexican folk art. Recommended for ages 13–18.
Cuisine Corner: Alcapurrias
Wednesday, September 15, 6 p.m.
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by learning how to make alcapurrias. Yamira Lee Johnson, head chef and founder of Breaking Bread with Mira, shows us how to make this popular fried dish.
Hispanic Heritage Livestream Featuring Musician Sonia De Los Santos
Saturday, September 18, 4 p.m.
Bilingual children’s music sensation Sonia De Los Santos shares her joyful songs about nature, everyday life, and her own Mexican heritage and immigration to the U.S. Sonia’s award-winning music is in Spanish and English, with sounds inspired by various Latin American rhythms including son jarocho, cumbia, gaita, currulao and huayno hailing from Mexico, Colombia and Peru as well as U.S. folk traditions. Messages of community music making and cultural bridge building will inspire and excite children and grown-ups of all backgrounds. This performance will stream via the OCLS Facebook and Youtube pages. Recommended for families.

Celebrate your creativity! Enjoy stories and songs in Spanish and English while expressing yourself through art in the style of Frida Kahlo. Recommended for ages 3–5.
Meet the Authors in Celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month

Paper Molas Art
Monday, September 27, 6 p.m.
Learn about the indiginous Guna people of Panama. Create a paper Molas inspired by the Panamanian folk art in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Recommended for ages 6–12.
In celebration of International Day of Peace (September 21), OCLS is partnering with Valencia College’s Peace and Justice Institute to present events about peace education during their Global Peace Week.
Exercise Your Empathy!

In this interactive workshop, we will examine habitual responses that often lead to disconnection, then learn – and practice – practical tools to offer empathy to both yourself and others.
Tools for Finding Inner Peace
Monday, September 27, 4–5:15 p.m.
This workshop will focus on tools and strategies for selfcare and techniques for finding inner peace during this current climate.
Tuesday, September 28, 10:30–11:45 a.m.
In this hands-on experience, you will be led to tune into yourself, your environment and the people around you using on-your-feet exercises that promote listening, non-judgement, curiosity and positivity.
