May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month at Orange County Library – Orange County Library System is celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month in May with fun programming for the little ones to enjoy safely at home. Learn basic Chinese character history as you challenge your knowledge of them on May 11 during Chinese Character Scroll. Create a unique, flying craft that celebrates children and their happiness during Japanese Koinobori on May 13. Little Chef: Dumpling Dreams invites your young chef’s to make their own delicious dumplings while hearing an inspiring story on May 20.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a national initiative that focuses on fostering strong early literacy skills in children, beginning at birth, by encouraging caregivers to read one thousand books to their child by the time they enter kindergarten. Yoda is small, but wise. Learn how to fold a Star Wars character origami. Recommended for ages 8–12.

We HeART Mom!  

Tuesday, May 4, 3 p.m.  

Celebrate mom, grandma or the special caregiver in your life by crafting and creating art to let her know just how much she means to you. Recommended for families with children ages 6–12.

Artsy Toddler 

Thursdays, May 6–27, 10 a.m.  

Paint, paste, glue, stamp and create! Young children will enjoy stories, songs and exploring age-appropriate art experiences.


Thursday, May 6, 6:30 p.m.  

Learn the definition, characteristics and types of bullying. Identify the impacts of bullying and learn how to prevent it. Receive information and resources for victims of bullying.

Chinese Character Scroll  

Tuesday, May 11, 2:30 p.m.  

Learn basic Chinese character history. Create a scroll with drawn characters. Challenge your knowledge of the characters we learn.

Let’s Write  

Wednesday, May 12, 3 p.m.  

Who wants to write their own short story? Join us as we creatively brainstorm and write a short story together. Recommended for ages 6–8.

Limericks Are Fun!  

Wednesday, May 12, 4 p.m.  

Celebrate National Limerick Day and learn about the history of limerick poems. Then follow along as we create our own limericks and rhyme patterns. Recommended for ages 9–12.

Japanese Koinobori Craft  

Thursday, May 13, 4 p.m.  

A story and craft that celebrates children and their happiness. Create a flying carp craft with us. Recommended for ages 9–12.

DIY Miniature Zen Gardens  

Wednesday, May 19, 4 p.m.  

Construct a Zen garden from rocks, gravel, and other found materials while exploring the art of abstraction. Recommended for ages 13 -17.

Little Chef: Dumpling Dreams 

Thursday, May 20, 2 p.m.  

How far will Joyce Chen’s dumpling dream go? Learn about her inspiring story and whip up a delicious dumpling recipe. Recommended for ages 3–5.

Art History for Kids: Asian Calligraphy  

Saturday, May 22, 2 p.m.  

Learn the history of calligraphy as it moved from China to Korea and Japan and make your own masterpiece. Recommended for ages 9–12.

Moon Myths  

Thursday, May 27, 4 p.m.  

Do you feel different when there’s a full moon? Do you think it could be made of cheese? Find out what else people across the world believe about the moon. Recommended for ages 6–9.
